Pearls of Wisdom By Lady Umm Al Sadiq a.s

In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful And All praises due to Allah, Lord of the Worlds, And may He send his Peace and Blessings upon Mohammed and the Family of Mohammed, the Imams and the Mahdis.

If I were to give an advice for any human being regardless of their religion or creed, I’d remind them to beware of complaining and its damaging effects on their life, and contrarily, to seize the power of gratitude and its healing power on their life.

Complaining is not only the foundation of unhappiness but it is also the main force that eventually strips you off all the blessings that you already have in your life.

But acknowledging the blessings you already have in your life is a magnet for miracles.

Science has proven that your mental states become neural traits that can strongly impact the quality of your life; physically, psychologically, mentally, and your overall well being.

Science has also proven that frequent complaining has the power to rewire your brain in such a way that could have long lasting effects, setting you up for failure and unhappiness, time and time again, without you even knowing it.

Your brain is created to be efficient. And so when you repeat a behavior, such as complaining, your neurons spread out to one another to make the information flow easier, making repeating the behaviour of complaining easier for you every time - so easy, in fact, that you may not even recognize it. Overtime you start finding it easier to be negative regardless of all the positive things happening around you. And the more you complain, your neurons become closer together and their connections become more permanent.

This can be referred to as "experience-dependent neuroplasticity" which is a term that refers to the development and arrangement of neuron connections in our brains as a result of our life experiences. Neurons that fire together wire together, according to neuroscience. This means that every time we have a thought, feel a sentiment, or experience a physical sensation, thousands of neurons are stimulated, and they all join together to form a neural network or neural pathways. These neural pathways make frequently repeated tasks easier for you to repeat again in the future, whether those tasks are positive (like gratitude) or negative (like complaining). Your brain creates those neural pathways for whatever you repeatedly think. Just as a musician develops a neural pathway dedicated to the specific movements and thoughts linked to playing their instrument, people who regularly complain will create a neural pathway dedicated to complaining.

This means that it is crucial for everyone to understand that we wire our brains based on our repetitive thinking throughout our lives. Whether what we think is positive or negative, the more we think it the more we are going to improve at it. As mentioned, when you frequently complain and grumble, your brain literally creates neural pathways that are specifically dedicated to complaining. The more you complain, the more you strengthen the neural pathways of complaining which you literally created in your brain! It is a vicious cycle!

And if you keep your mind looping on complaining and grumbling, it will be easier for your brain to locate that portion of your brain and aid you in thinking those negative thoughts over and over and over! As a result, complaining and unhappiness become your default manner of living, or as they call it “default mode living“

When our default mode living is one of complaints and unthankfulness, even the goodness that we have in our life will be stripped away from us, like Jesus pbuh said:
“Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.” - Matthew 13:12

Meaning those who are thankful for what they have and those who choose to see the blessings in their situations and lives instead of complaining and whining at what goes wrong, those ones will be given even more blessings and goodness. So by being grateful they would actually be attracting much more blessings and abundance to their lives, or like Jesus pbuh put it “Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance”.

And those who keep complaining, they will be stripped off whatever they had, leaving them with more things to complain about, meaning the more they complain, the more they would be attracting negative things to their lives, just like Jesus pbuh said “Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.”

Also Allah swt says in the Holy Quran “If you are grateful, I will certainly give you more. But if you are ungrateful, surely My punishment is severe” - Surat Ibrahim verse 7

Do you see how impactful this is?!

Negativity is the absolute enemy of happiness and success. So definitely you do NOT want to be building neural pathways of negativity in your brain and strengthening them by your frequent complaining and grumbling to the point where they become extremely difficult to break!

The good news is GRATITUDE can substitute those negative neural pathways you created in your brain with positive ones. The more you think grateful thoughts, the stronger you make your gratitude neural pathway in your brain, which will have substantial positive effects on the quality of your life.

Gratitude or thankfulness is the direct opposite of complaining. Anytime you find yourself about to complain or grumble, pause and think of all the blessings in your life you should be grateful for. If you do this you will find that the negative thought is beginning to disappear.

Be grateful for the small blessings in your life. You never know when the day will come when you'll look back and discover that they were the great blessings

“Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure - Philippians 2:14

“Nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer” - 1 Corinthians 10:10
Every day is Ashura, and every land is Karbala
